This page is to compile a "wish list" of information and photos cam viewers would like to have from the KNP&P rangers about the bears or other park related things (wildlife, places, resources, important happenings).  It is also to list the information in the current Bears of Brooks River book that needs to be updated or edited.

Notice something missing from the "Wish List" wiki page?  Perhaps current or former rangers have granted that wish...check out the "Wishes Granted " page to see the information and photos rangers have shared.

Bear Information & Photos:[]

2018 Genetics Study Samples Obtained:[]

Ranger Michael Saxton (via media rangers) has provided us with list for 2016 and 2017 genetics study samples that were obtained and/or attempted.  Would it be possible to obtain a list of bears that genetics study samples were obtained from / attempted to be obtained from during the 2018 season?

2018 Official Bears Observed During Bear Monitoring Sessions (July & Fall):[]

We would like to obtain an official list of bears observed during bear monitoring sessions in both July and Fall of 2018.  It would be really helpful if the list included bears observed the required 3 times and those observed less than the required 3 times during official bear monitoring sessions.

Tamara Olson's Genetics Study Results:[]

The results of Tamara Olson's genetics study determined that only a few males sired a disproportionately large number of cubs.  Those boars were 24 BB, 219 One-Toe, 864 Norman, and an unidentified male.  Is it possible for us to find out who those offspring were that lead to that conclusion and which boar sired them?

Snip of Mike Fiz' 2013 comment:

Goatee (possibly 001):[]

In 1988 Goatee was classified as an older adult female by S. Fitkin and T. Olson.  In 2013 Ranger Tammy shared with us that Goatee was believed to be 410's mother and that her number was #1 (001).  Ranger Tammy also shared that Goatee had at least 2 spring cubs in that litter.  A biologist that previously worked at Katmai for a long time watched 410 as a spring cub.  The biologist observed an incident where 410's sibling from that litter was killed, but 410 escaped up a tree.

Cam viewers would like to know if the following information about Goatee or any photos of Goatee are available:

Year 1st classified, last year observed, number of known litters, years of those litters, number of offspring in each litter, number of years each litter was kept, number of offspring that remained with Goatee as yearlings, 2.5 year-olds...  Were / are any of Goatee's offspring known to use the Brooks River area as independent subadults / adults, if so who, any possible photographs of Goatee and her offspring, any other descriptive information about Goatee (coat color, size, muzzle type, life history, behavior/habits (ex: preferred fishing spot, observed summer/fall or both)

This is all the information we have on Goatee and her known litters of cubs , so any additional information and photos would be greatly appreciated.

45 Tatonka:[]

45 Tatonka was first identified as a young adult in 2007.  We would like to have access to photos of 45 from 2007, 2009, September 2013, October 2013, and October 2014.  Additional photos from 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, and September 2014 would also be greatly appreciated.

68:[]

68 was first identified as a subadult in 2007.  All of the photos available of him in the Bears of Brooks book are from 2010, 2012, and 2016.  Are there other photos available of him from 2006,  2008- 2010, 2011, 2013 - 2015.  (Please note:  On February 21, 2018, Mike Fitz provided two photos of 68 in 2007 as a newly independent subadult:  Photo #1 from 10/02/2007 & Photo #2 from 10/10/2007 )

115:  []

115 was included in the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book with photos from October 2014, September 2015 (? 115's page says 115 was not observed in 2015), September 2017 and October 2017.  Cam viewers would like to have access to photos of 115 from 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

132:[]

The Bears of Brooks River books state that 132 was identified as a 4.5 year-old subadult in 2009.  Was that age of 4.5 year-old based on the belief / speculation that she was the 2005 offspring of a specific sow?  If not, how was the 4.5 year-old age obtained?  If so, who is the sow that is believed to be 132's mother?

209 Beauty:[]

402 and 403 Egberta's mother is believed to be 209 Beauty.  The only other thing we know about 209 Beauty is that she had 2 yearlings in 2005 .  We would love to have access to more photos and information of 209 Beauty.  402 and 403 Egberta have been confirmed as sibling by DNA if that helps locate any possible photographs of 209.   The information cam viewers would like to have on 209 Beauty is the same as the information we would like to have on 1 Goatee above.

261:[]

261 first appeared in the 2017 Bears of Brooks River book.  All of the photos included for her are from July and September of 2016.  Cam viewers would like to have access to prior season photos of her.  The bear book says she has been observed using the river every year in the fall since 2010.  We would love to fill in the gaps of 261's wiki page with some photos from each season.

274 Overflow: []

We would like to know if Ranger Leslie and/or Ranger Tammy think that it is possible that 511 is 274 Overflow in the fall?  If 511 is not 274 Overflow in the fall, can additional photos and information on 511 please be provided to cam viewers?

293 Long Neck:[]

293 Long Neck  is an adult male bear that cam viewers would like to see included in a future edition of the Bears of Brooks book.  We have very limited information and one photo of this bear.  Any additional photos and information would be greatly appreciated.

409 Beadnose:[]

409 Beadnose was first observed as a subadult in 1999.  The earliest NPS photos we have access to are from 2002.  Are there any photos of 409 from 1999 - 2001 available for us to add to her wiki page ? In 2004, 409 Beadnose had her 1st known litter, 1 spring cub.  Did 409 Beadnose return to the Brooks River with that offspring as a yearling in 2005? (yes, she was seen in sessions in June and September with the yearling which was described as "very large."-Ranger Jeanne, 7/2/18). Did 409 successfully emancipate that cub?  If so, when? (Unknown, but 409 Beadnose was recorded alone in a session on 6/20/06-RJ.) Are there photos available of the family group from 2005?

425 Jan:[]

425 Jan  is a bear that had been observed in prior seasons, but was also observed and darted in 2017.  Cam viewers would love to see her included in the next edition of the Bears of Brooks book.

435 Holly and 410 Family Groups in 2007:[]

In 2007 when 410 had her last known litter of spring cubs, 435 Holly also had 89 Backpack as a yearling.  410 was napping with her two spring cubs.  435 Holly was also in the same area at that time with yearling 89 Backpack.  89 Backpack and one of 410's spring cubs began to play.  435 was not thrilled and bluff charged 410's spring cub.  410 was like "meh" and went back to resting.  The park service has this on video.  Is it possible for this video to be added to the KNP&P YouTube page?

461:[]

461 is an adult male that appears on Ranger Leslie's 2016 Bears Seen list for fall.  Rangers shared limited information about 461 with LaniH around 12/2/2016

"461 is a bear that I observed once or twice in the upper river in late September. I would never had properly ID'd him without Ranger Leslie's help. His description is: Adult male, dark claws, brown coat, dark ears, prominent poofy brow, medium sized body. He has been observed '13, '14, '15, and '16.  ( pic of 461 )"

Cam viewers would like to see 461 included in a future edition of the Bears of Brooks River book or to have access to photos of 461 from 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

474:[]

474's pages in the 2016 and 2017 Bears of Brooks River books contain the same photos from 2014 and 2015.  We would greatly appreciate updated photos of 474 from the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

504:  []

Are there any nicknames for 504 listed in the bear monitoring records.  At one time, rangers (Ranger David Kopshever) referred to 504 as "Charge".  We would like to know if that nickname "stuck" and if it was used by other park staff, especially bear monitoring staff.  If so, could it be added to the next edition of the Bears of Brooks River book as an official nickname?

505:[]

The 505 information and photos available in the 2016 and 2017 Bears of Brooks River books is almost identical.  All of the photos are from July 2014 and July 2015.  The 2018 edition of the book provided 2017 photos of 505.  Is it possible for some 2016 NPS photos of 505 to be made available.

511:[]

511  was an older subadult or young adult male in 2014 and is sometimes misidentified as 128 Grazer.  He was observed in 2014, and suspected to have been observed by cam viewers in 2015.  Cam viewers would like to see 511 included in a future edition of the Bears of Brooks River book.  If he is not included in the 2018 version, is it possible for more photos of 511 to be made available to us? We would like to know if Ranger Leslie and/or Ranger Tammy think that it is possible that 511 is 274 Overflow in the fall?  If 511 is not 274 Overflow in the fall, can additional photos and information on 511 please be provided to cam viewers?

603:  []

There has been conflicting information about 603, 611, and 801 shared by the rangers during the 2017 season vs the information provided in the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book on both 603's page (page 78 and 801's page (page 83). The bear that appears on 603's page of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book was identified to cam viewers in 2017 as bear 611.  The bear that appears on 801's page of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book was identified to cam viewers in 2017 as bear 603.  The 2018 Bears of Brooks River book does not include a page for bear 611 for us to compare / draw information or photos from. Would it be possible for Ranger Leslie and/or Ranger Tammy to confirm that the bear that appears on page 78 of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book is in fact correctly identified as 603 and that the bear on page 83 of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book is in fact 801?  Would it be possible for photos and information on bear 611 to be included in the 2019 edition of the book to help us straighten things out?

611:  (part 1 of 2)[]

611:  (part 2 of 2)[]

611  is a bear that we believe was first classified in 2015.  We understand from communications from Ranger David Kopshever that Ranger Leslie had 611 on her possibilities list of bears that could be the 2017 adult male bear with wounds / scars under both of his eyes in spring / early summer.  (Note the bear with wounds / scars under both eyes appears to now be bear 801, see page 83 of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book.  We would like to see 611 included in 2018 Bears of Brooks River book.  We were provided the following Fall 2015 NPS photos of 611:  Is it possible to confirm if these photos are in fact of 611?

700 Marge:[]

We would like to know how 700 obtained the nickname Marge.

We would also like to have access to photos of 700 Marge from 2004, 2005, 2016, 2017, and 2018.  Additional photos of 700 Marge from 2003, 2012, and 2013 would also be greatly appreciated.

718:[]

718  is an older sow was initially classified in July 2016.  Ranger Leslie discussed this bear during the 9/26/2016 live chat.  Cam viewers would like to have access to additional photos and information about distinctive behaviors, features (scars, marks,).  It would be helpful to have 718 included in a future edition of the Bears of Brooks River book.  We have very limited infromation and photos available to us on 718 .

720:  Adult Female with 2 Yearlings in 2005, Last Observed in 2006 :[]

720, an adult female, had 2 yearlings in 2005.  We would appreciate any additional information and photos on this sow.   720 will be the first number that we now know to be recycled in the bear monitoring data (with the exception of the possibility that 001 was Diver and 001 was also Goatee but we haven't been able to confirm that information) so it would be very interesting to know her life story and to document her on the bearcam wiki.  Knowing things like the year this 720 was initially identified and classified, which years she was observed, and other life history information (known litters of cubs, photos) would really help to tell this story of how bear monitoring numbers are used and then how they are recycled into reusable numbers for future newly identified bears.  This 720 was last observed in 2006 .

720:  2016 Newly Classified Subadult:[]

720 is a bear that was initially classified as a subadult in Fall 2016.  Cam viewers would like to have access to more photos of 720.

800 Series Newly Identified & Classified 2017 Bears:[]

We have little information and few photos of 2017 800 series newly identified bears.  801 and 804 were included in the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book, but the other bears that were newly identified and classified in 2017 and assigned numbers in the 800 series are bears we have little information and limited photos (if any) of them.

We would greatly appreciate other bears like 803, 805, 806, 807, 808, 809 and 810 being included in future editions of the Bears of Brooks River books or if NPS staff could provide identification, life history and/or other information and photos of these bears.

801:  (part 1 of 2)[]

801: (part 2 of 2) (? Year 1st Identified)[]

On 801's page of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book (page 83) at the top it says:

"Year First Identified: Subadult in 2015"

600 series numbers were assigned to newly identified and classified bears in 2015.  800 series numbers were assigned to newly identified and classified bears in 2017.  801 was an adult in 2017.  It appears that 800 was an adult in 2017.  Can this conflicting information be clarified and explained if necessary (for example if 801 was only observed twice in 2015 as a subadult so therefore not assigned a number until 2017 when he was observed enough times to obtain a number.)?

804 / 806 ? Which one of them is really the 2017 Little Lip Fisher?:[]

In 2017 media rangers informed us that 804, a female, was the 2017 "Little Lip Fisher",  In 2018 media rangers told us that the 2017 "Little Lip Fisher" was really 806, a male.  Is it possible for us to obtain clarification on the true identify of the 2017 "Little Lip Fisher"?  Is the 2017 "Little Lip Fisher" the bear that Ranger Tammy referred to as "Not505"?  If 806 is the 2017 "Little Lip Fisher", would it be possible to obtain identification and life history information and NPS photos of this bear?

817:  Adult Female with 2 Yearlings in 2005, Last Observed in 2005 :[]

817 had 2 yearlings in 2005817 was last observed in 2005 .  Any additional information and photos of this sow would be greatly appreciated.

858 Artie:[]

858 Artie is believed to be the 2004 male offspring of 402.  858 Artie was observed using the Brooks River as an independent bear until 2010.  Identification and life history information as well as photos of 858 Artie would be greatly appreciated.

859 Stella:[]

859 Stella is believed to be the 2004 female offspring of 402.  859 Stella was observed using the Brooks River as an independent bear.  Identification and life history information as well as photos of 858 Artie would be greatly appreciated.  We do not know when she was last observed.

868 Wayne Brother:[]

We would like to have spring/summer and fall photos of 868 from 2005, 2009, 2010, and fall photos of 868 from 2013 for his wiki page.

879:[]

Cam viewers would like to know if there are photos available of 879 from 2006, and/or 2008 - 2011.  We do have two photos of him from 2007 in the iTunes book, but would really like to see more photos of him, especially from his younger years.

900:[]

900 is an adult female that we learned about in 2018.  We have extremely limited information and no NPS photos of 900 available to us.  Additional informaiton, photos, and 900's inclusion in the 2019 Bears of Brook River book would be greatly appreciated.

Bears of Brooks River Book Edits:[]

115:[]

The Life History section of 115's page of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book states:

"Excluding 2009 and 2015, #115 has been seen each year since 2008."

However a photo of 115 from September 2015 appears in the center of the bottom row of photos on 115's page of the 2018 Bears of Brooks River book.

Was 115 observed in September 2015 or is the date on the photo in the center of the bottom row of photos incorrect?

402:[]

known litters of cubs , not 6 between 2004 and 2018.  402 has had litters of cubs in 2004, 2007 (1 spring cub, soon lost it, returned to estrus and mated), 2008 (3 spring cubs),  2011, 2013, 2015 and 2018.

435 Holly:[]

They list her as young adult or older subadult in 2001.  Further down in pics, bottom row center, they show her as subadult in 2003.

451:[]

In the 2017 Bears of Brooks River book there is a photo of 451 with her 2 remaining yearlings, one of which was dying.  The caption under the photo says September 2015.  This photo is actually from October 2015.

503 Cubadult:  []

The second sentence of his identification section says:  "In July his fur is light to medium-brown, and he sheds dark eye rings and a dark face."  Should that be he has dark eye rings and a dark face?

801:[]

Other Requested Information:[]

Bear Monitoring Questions:[]

1) Is it possible to provide the dates that bear monitoring takes place?  (Example Spring / Summer:  June 15th through July 31st and Fall:  September 1st throught October 7th)

2) Is it possible to confirm with Ranger Leslie or Ranger Tammy if known bears (example: 32, 89, 480, 856, 128, 409, 410, 854) must be observed three times during Spring / Summer or Fall to be included in the bears observed data or is the three times observed only applicable to newly classified bears (example: 718 in 2016)?

3)  Is it possible to provide an annual list of bears observed each month?  (for comparision to our bears observed on live cams lists example:  2016  or 2017 )

Closed captioning:[]

On July 13, 2017 cam viewer Cindy Z FL inquired if closed captioning was possible for the live chats.  Ranger Dave replied that cc was not currently available, but that he would check to see if it was available for future broadcasts.  Has this option been explored?
